AI Can Draft It In Ten Minutes – But Is AI All You Need?

As AI use increases, a common question I have heard for years has taken on a new perspective and increased in frequency. The question is: “Can’t I just ask an AI tool to help with positioning and pricing?” I’ll tell you the honest answer: it depends on what you mean by “help.”

AI can generate a positioning statement. It can spit out three pricing tiers with clever names and a comparison table that looks like it belongs on a Series A pitch deck. It can write a services page that sounds confident. What it cannot do is tell you whether any of that is true – true to your market, your margins, true to the buyer who is actually writing the check, and, most importantly, addresses the underlying issue that is causing your disappointing results.

The Work Isn’t the Words. It’s the Diagnosis.

Most business owners think positioning, offerings, pricing, and packaging are writing problems. They’re not. They’re diagnostic problems that happen to end in writing.

An AI tool can only work with what you feed it – your description of your business, your assumptions about your buyer, your feelings about what makes you different. If those inputs are off, and for most owners at the growth-plateau stage they are, the AI will hand back a polished, confident, well-formatted version of the same misalignment that got them stuck in the first place.

Garbage in, beautifully formatted garbage out.

This is where the comparison actually needs to be made – not tool versus consultant, but input quality versus output quality. An AI tool is a production engine, not a skilled diagnostician. It cannot see your delivery or capacity, sit in on a client call, or catch the offhand comment that reveals your actual differentiator – the one you’ve been underselling because it seemed too obvious to mention.

The Hidden Time Cost of “Doing It Yourself With AI”

There’s a second comparison worth considering, because it’s the one most owners underestimate: the time and expertise needed – both of which you may not have.

Running your own positioning and pricing overhaul with an AI tool doesn’t just require prompting. It requires:

  • Pulling and reviewing internal data to identify patterns you’re too close to see objectively
  • Interviewing your teams and getting honest answers, which is harder than it sounds when you’re the boss
  • Reconciling conflicting internal opinions about “what we actually do”
  • Testing draft positioning against real buyer language
  • Rebuilding your pricing model against actual value, not a template or formula
  • Repackaging services across every channel so the new positioning doesn’t just live on one page
  • Catching your own blind spots, which by definition you cannot do alone

That is not an afternoon with a chatbot. That is weeks of a busy owner’s time, pulled from the parts of the business only they can run, spent doing work that requires outside perspective to do well in the first place.

The Truth

An AI tool can help you produce content once the diagnosis is made. What it cannot do is tell you whether your diagnosis is correct to begin with – and for most $5M–$50M companies hitting a growth plateau, the diagnosis is exactly where the misalignment is usually hiding. More polished output on a flawed diagnosis doesn’t fix revenue friction. It just makes the misalignment more visible, and appear faster.

If you’ve already done the diagnostic work – real interviews, real data, real outside perspective – an AI tool is a genuinely useful production partner for what comes next. If you haven’t, no amount of prompting gets you there, because the tool was never built to ask the questions that get you there.

And if you’re not sure, let’s have a conversation. And rest assured that I see it as a waste of time – both yours and mine – to pitch something that does not add value for you.
